US Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy has kicked off her first official visit to Queensland by hitting the waves with surfing superstar Mick Fanning.
Ms Kennedy arrived in the Sunshine State over the weekend – catching up with Fanning at a beach on Saturday where he taught her some surfing tips.
The US Embassy shared photos of Ms Kennedy lapping up the Queensland sun with Fanning as she had a go surfing the crystal clear blue waves.
“Ambassador Kennedy is in Queensland, and what better way to start her first visit to the Sunshine State than a surf lesson … with World Champion Mick Fanning,” the Embassy posted online.
“When you learn from the master you stand up on your first try!”
In a video the embassy posted, Ms Kennedy is seen standing up on the board before falling backwards into the water.
The trip to Queensland is Ms Kennedy’s first since taking up her diplomatic post in Australia following her nomination to the role by US President Joe Biden.
It is unclear how long the ambassador will spend in Queensland.
It is understood she will meet with Queensland political leaders, engage in cultural activities, and venture beyond the state’s South East during her visit.
Ms Kennedy has already made a number of trips around Australia in the past year – including two visits to Western Australia as well as trips to Victoria and the Northern Territory.
