A FORMER Australia Zoo keeper turned big cat chaser is out to solve a mystery he says is Australia's version of Big Foot.

Warana animal enthusiast Vaughan King will star on a compelling documentary that investigates recent sightings of elusive apex predators.

For the past 12 months, Mr King has been combing the Australian wilderness in search of pumas and panthers.

His aim is to prove the existence of a living population of big cats in the Australian bush, creatures whom authorities deny exist.

The 45-minute documentary was largely shot in Victoria, but also parts of Queensland, NSW and Western Australia.

"I've had a big interest in big cats for more than 15 years, it's been a passion project, well, an obsession since," Mr King said.

"It's one of those mysteries that's embedded in folklore, so it you can solve it you go down in history.

"It's Australia's version of Bigfoot and I want to prove they're out there.

"These are apex predators who are built to kill and have killed. I believe they're out there."

Only two weeks ago Mr King investigated leads in the Mooloolah Valley and Eudlo region.

It's something he has dedicated his adult life to the cause and is both proud and excited that the documentary will air.

Mr King wasn't asked how the show finished but said it offered some emotional stories from Australians who shared their sighting stories.

He said the subject is not often taken seriously but to be aired on the "esteemed" Discovery Channel will give it long-overdue exposure.

The documentary, titled The Hunt: In Search of Australia's Big Cats will air during Mystery Month on Discovery Channel which starts May 1.

Mr King's episode will feature later on May 5 at 9.30pm.
