A fun wedding shoot re-enacting an old family photo had painful consequences for a Sunshine Coast bride who snapped her ankle during a jump and ended up in hospital.
Liz Costello said the radiologist who assessed her ankle had never had to x-ray a patient in a wedding dress before.
Despite the injury, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital nurse still managed to attend her own wedding reception, albeit with a foot in a moon boot resting on top of a chair all night.
“I’ll definitely remember my wedding day forever,” she said.
The painful event unfolded just after Mrs Costello said “I do” to her partner of 12 years and concrete business owner Adam Costello at Point Cartwright on Saturday, November 20.
The Nambour local and her son Scott, 22, were re-enacting a jumping photo they had taken when he was 12 years old for a scouts fundraiser when the accident happened.
Mrs Costello said she knew she was in trouble when she heard a “crack” and she landed on her back.
“My husband was standing there going ‘I knew you shouldn't have done that’,” she said.
Mrs Costello’s son carried his mother up a hill before two men helped the bride along a pathway to a carpark.
They waited about 45 minutes for an ambulance while Mrs Costello’s sister held her foot in an upright position and an ice pack was strapped to the injured ankle.
Mrs Costello said emergency staff at Sunshine Coast University Hospital were shocked to see her in a wedding dress and promised they would do their best to get her treated as soon as possible.
X-rays confirmed Mrs Costello had fractured her ankle and a moon boot was fitted to her leg.
Mrs Costello was still able to arrive at her own reception, although two hours late and in the back of an ambulance.
She thanked the medical team, especially ambulance officer Naomi, for their efforts.
“I was so worried because I thought I’d ruined the wedding … I was disappointed in myself that I had done it,” she said.
Wedding guests cheered when Mrs Costello was wheeled into her reception at the Kawana Surf Club.
“Everyone was saying ‘you’re such a trooper’ … my husband was very happy that I had made it to the reception,” she said.
While the newly weds missed out on their first dance and using the pool facilities at the hotel they stayed at that night, Mrs Costello said she was grateful to be marrying her life partner.
“I know I won’t be jumping on a hill again that’s for sure,” she said.
