Sunshine Coast records one Covid-19 death as case numbers rise

Queensland’s chief health officer calls COVID parties "utterly ridiculous"

A Sunshine Coast resident has died from Covid-19, as more than 900 cases were recorded across the region overnight.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk revealed the state recorded six deaths since yesterday, marking it the deadliest day since the pandemic began.

“To lose six in one day is a big shock,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“I think this would be a very difficult time for families at the moment.”

The Sunshine Coast has not recorded a confirmed Covid-19 death since March, 2020 where a 77-year-old Noosaville woman died after testing positive to the virus.

The woman had returned to Noosa on a flight from Sydney when her condition deteriorated significantly and she was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

Queensland Health data revealed one of the six deaths was recorded in the Sunshine Coast, while 917 new cases reported overnight brings the region’s total to 9,647 cases.

Statewide there were more than 14,000 new cases recorded.

Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard two of the deaths were people in their 70s, three were in their 80s and one in their 90s.

Five of the six were double vaccinated, one was unvaccinated and none had had their booster shot.

He said three died in residential aged care.

With confirmed Covid-19 cases growing by hundreds daily on the Sunshine Coast and in Noosa, new data has provided a suburb by suburb breakdown of the location for every known case.

The tragic news follows a touching tribute by a Sunshine Coast man who lost his mother on January 7.

Felinda Dunlop died in her sleep, aged 64, while fighting Covid-19.

Ms Palaszczuk announced on Thursday the Queensland border will also be opening from 1am on Saturday, January 15 as the state is nearing the 90 per cent vaccination rate next week.

This means anyone coming domestically into Queensland by road or air would not need to show their border pass.

Dr Gerrard said Queensland’s border restrictions have now “done their job” and are no longer required as part of the state’s health response.

“The border restrictions have served their purpose and that was to allow every Queenslander access to the vaccine,” he said.

“Now the virus, as always expected, is spreading through Queensland but with a vaccinated population.

“The job has been done and these borders are no longer required.”
