Police have urged Sunshine Coast residents to be aware of emergency alerts coming through in the severe weather season.

Sunshine Coast Police District acting superintendent Chris Toohey reminded residents on Wednesday to remain vigilant and maintain good communication, including severe weather alerts provided by emergency services.

Alerts are sent through text message via phone number +61 444 444 444 to all residents.

Acting superintendent Chris Toohey said police urged residents to check the phone number is not blocked on their device, as some may assume the alerts to be a scam.

He suggested saving the number as a favourite to ensure any alerts were received.

“That is a point of truth for us to provide everything that’s happening to us here as a community and make sure we can keep our community as safe as possible,” he said.

Emergency services have been exercising certain scenarios – including flooding – to be fully prepared in order to provide safety to the community.

Acting superintendent Chris Toohey also asked residents to remain vigilant during the severe weather season.

“We will give you timely reminders as incidents occur,” he said.

“Make sure to look after your neighbours, make sure to look after your family and friends if these incidents occur and we can get through it all together.”

He said disasters often brought the best out of the Sunshine Coast community, and police hope to contribute to any such incidents.

He encouraged households to have enough resources for 48 hours in case of an emergency, including water and food which does not require electricity, to prepare in the event of a power shortage.
