A top Sunshine Coast private school has revealed plans for its latest addition to the new junior school precinct.

Sunshine Coast Grammar submitted a development application to the Sunshine Coast Council on May 31 to construct two new three-storey “junior buildings”, which will replace existing single-storey buildings near Grammar School Way.

Floor plans show the new buildings at the Forest Glen school will have 26 classrooms, up from 21 which are there currently.

This is in addition to 11 existing classrooms, which will remain.

Most classrooms are proposed to be 70 sqm.

A new covered play space is proposed in between the two new buildings, the floor plan states, and both buildings include a lift and stairs.

Application documents state the new buildings may be used for outside school hours care for students or onsite student accommodation.

A Sunshine Coast Grammar spokeswoman said the junior school building was the second of a three-stage project to create a “purpose-built” junior school precinct.

The first stage was the prep building, which opened in 2022 and is directly behind the proposed new buildings, separated by a grassed amphitheatre.

The school was opened in 1997 and its 2021 annual report stated it had 1356 students from prep to year 12.

It comes after the school backflipped on an earlier project to build a new cafeteria, which caused controversy when it was revealed part of the idyllic Rainforest Walk surrounding the school would be cleared for construction.

The spokesperson said the project was then paused and reset before the school committed to a new location.

“We continue to communicate openly and often with our community, including our staff, parents and key stakeholders including parents,” the spokesperson said.

“The community are supportive of the project, the new location and retention of the Rainforest Walk.”

The removal and resubmission of the development applications for the junior buildings is unrelated to the cafeteria project.
