Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg is set to embark on what is being viewed as a crucial overseas mission to forge ties with Malaysia.
His three-day whirlwind trip to attend the Asian Smart Cities Conference 2022 was given the green light by councillors at the September ordinary meeting in Caloundra on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
The conference is held from October 6-8, 2022 in Kuala Lumpur as part of the Selangor Smart City and Digital Economy Convention.
Economic development officers made the request in the meeting, noting all travel and accommodation expenses would be covered by the state government of Selangor with the costs of participation estimated to be about $6700.
Mr Landsberg will deliver a keynote speech on behalf of Mayor Mark Jamieson and take part in a panel discussion.
Deputy Mayor Rick Baberowski said it was a “very important beginning of a relationship”.
“Our neighbours are going to be incredibly powerful economic partners as well as social and environmental partners and I think this gives us a door that is being opened and we should walk through it,” Mr Baberowski said.
Councillor Jason O’Pray added the trip was important to build on the work put in by former councillor Jenny McKay.
Councillors were unanimous in their support for Mr Landsberg to make the trip.
