A shopping centre, retirement village, church and boutique units are among new developments that have been pitched for Nambour.
Ignite Community Church senior Pastor Darin Browne said he was moving his congregation to the town as he believed in its potential.
“We’re relocating into the centre of Nambour because our heart is to reach out to the community,” Mr Browne said.
“We just feel that this is going to increasingly be the hub of our community (as) Nambour is ready to grow in strength.”
The church has submitted a development application to the council to build a permanent place of worship and carpark in Currie Street.
Coast Church Inc is also the owner of the 1642 sqm site.
“We’ve moved into a 60-year-old building, so we need to sure things up and remove things,” he said.
“We want everything to be safe and secure.”
The group has been in the main street of Nambour for three months since shifting from Woombye.
The proposed development includes retaining an existing shop and office tenancies on the front of Currie Street and some tenancies fronting Short Street, which currently house Nambour Pawnbrokers and Secondhand, Complete Custom Footwear and Seven Seas Tattoo.
“The new place of worship will be located in the northern portion of the shops fronting Short Street,” application documents read.
The interior of the proposed building will include an auditorium and a stage, kitchenette, toilets and a storage room.
There will also be 15 new carparking spaces provided.
The application states the project will be completed by “a community-based entity which relies on donations as its sole form of income”.
Four new units are also on the horizon at Pine Street.
Owner of the land and director of SX Homes Pty Ltd, Eric Dalgetty Bain, has given written permission for the development to go ahead on the 1017sq m site.
It is currently home to a detached dwelling which is set to be removed should the application progress.
The application is code assessable meaning no community notification or consultation is required.
The four units will have three bedrooms.
Another nine units have been proposed for the heart of Nambour with an application submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council from Coast company DEHC1.
Adams + Sparkes Town Planning submitted the plan on behalf of DEHC1 directors Mattheus De Bruyn and Malcolm Hamilton.
The 2936 sqm site at 3 Mount Pleasant Road is also owned by DEHC1.
The proposed development will consist of nine three-bedroom units, each with two carparking spaces.
A pre-lodgement meeting was held with council officers on February 25 to discuss the project.
“While it was noted that a full suite of technical detail was required to support a future application, council signalled ‘in principal’ support for the proposed development,” application documents read.
The report notes that while the site looks to be “covered by vegetation”, the proposed development area of the site is largely open, with only six established trees required to be removed.
A multimillion-dollar proposed retirement village remains on pause after developers secured a five-week suspension of the application assessment process.
It was the third extension granted for Highgate Development which lodged an application with the Sunshine Coast Council in November last year for a 275-home retirement village at Savilles Road in Nambour.
The controversial village has been met with concerns from nearby residents and the Sunshine Coast Environment Council.
Updated documents submitted to the council on June 15 showed the original plans for the complex had been reduced from 236 to 233 dwellings.
The council has since agreed to grant Andrew and Jo Pitcher of Highgate Development an extension until July 29.
A new housing project pitched for Nambour’s outskirts is still in the pipeline despite changes to its original proposal.
A proposed swim school has been axed in favour of a small-scale shopping centre to be built on the corner of Image Flat Road and Imagination Drive.
The change to the application was lodged with Sunshine Coast Council in December with further amended plans submitted in May by Lee Development Planning.
The proposal was submitted on behalf of Australian National Homes, which is directed by Tosh Murphy.
The proposal put to the council for assessment includes seven homes, a food and drink outlet and a small 463sq m shopping centre instead of the swim school and playground previously proposed for the northeastern corner of the site.
Sydney Street could soon become home to new families with a development application submitted for 18 units and an office space.
Murray & Associates (Qld) Pty Ltd submitted the report on behalf of Image Projects Group, directed by John Goulter and Ryan Veitch.
The 1012sq m site is in central Nambour near Howard and Currie Streets.
An office on the ground floor of the four-storey building will be 62sq m.
Three different unit types are proposed, being a mixture of one and two bedroom apartments.
Each unit provides kitchen, dining, living, laundry and robe facilities, with two bathrooms per unit.
