A major Sunshine Coast chicken farm has responded to odour and environmental concerns as they seek to double the number of sheds to comply with RSPCA standards.

The development application was first submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council by Woodland Enterprises Pty Ltd last year, seeking to expand the number of sheds on the 45.92 hectare property at 11 Murphys Road, Beerburrum to a total of 17.

In January, the council responded to the application stating “chronic odour impacts” were likely to occur if the expansion was to go ahead, as well as potential impacts on nearby wetlands.

Woodland Enterprises responded to the concerns in June, stating a revised odour assessment showed the levels were appropriate.

The development application is currently open for the community to make public submissions.

The planning report stated due to RSPCA standards the additional sheds were required to legally house the number of birds currently approved for the site.

“The proposal is for extensions to a poultry farm that has lawfully operated in excess of 10 years,” the planning report stated.

“Due to RSPCA density standard changes, the applicant seeks to construct additional sheds onsite to accommodate the original approved number of birds in response to the reduced industry standards.”

According to the report, if the expansion was approved the site could accommodate the approved 45,264 birds per shed.

“It is noted that the approved bird capacity cannot currently be accommodated onsite due to density reductions in accordance with industry regulations,” the report stated.

“The extension seeks to accommodate the approved bird capacity of 45,264 per shed.”

The proposal comes a year after Woodland Enterprises were granted council approval to expand another Sunshine Coast chicken farm.

The expansion plans for the site at 325 and 367 Red Rd Beerburrum involved six new sheds to house a total of 452,640 birds.

Public submissions on the proposal for 11 Murphy Rd close on July 29, 2024.
