Neighbours of a Sunshine Beach home whose garage was almost destroyed by fire raised the alarm after hearing an explosion, which firefighters confirming was caused by a charging battery.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Pacific Ave about 10.12am on Friday to reports of a house fire.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said crews arrived to smoke coming from a garage and were forced to cut the roller doors to gain entry.
She said they then began taking everything out from inside the garage to stop the fire from spreading.
The fire was extinguished by 11.30am.
Maroochydore Fire Command Acting Inspector Matt Phillips said neighbours heard an explosion and had called triple-0 after the homeowners evacuated the property.
“It’s quite likely that the fire started in some electrical equipment, possibly a battery that was being charged, that has exploded,” he said.
A QFES spokeswoman has since confirmed the fire was started by a power tool battery which was on charge.
She said it was a lithium ion battery, the same kind of batteries used in e-scooters.
There was significant damage to the contents downstairs rather than the structure itself, but Inspector Philips said it didn’t take long to extinguish thanks to a fast-acting local response.
“I would like to acknowledge the quick response of the occupant, who’s had a bit of a look around to see what was going on. As soon as she’s seen smoke, she’s evacuated from the house and then also called for help from the neighbours, who called triple-0.
“We’ve had a good response from our fire crews to manage the situation.”
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said all occupants were out of the house and no one was injured.
