A young couple have been left with just the clothes on their backs after a horrific fire ripped through their Sunshine Coast home just days before Christmas.
Dayle Gray and his fiance Billie Leacy were at work when their home at Eudlo – a converted shed they had made their own little haven – caught fire on December 23.
The fire, which started from a nearby ride-on lawnmower, ripped through the property and destroyed everything they owned. Sadly, they weren’t insured.
Mr Gray’s mum, Vicky Gray, said the “resilient” young couple had been living in the shed to save money for their dream home.
“Dayle and Billie are the epitome of resilience and love. Despite facing financial challenges, they’ve worked hard to create a home filled with warmth and dreams,” Ms Gray said.
“Together, they transformed this humble shed into a haven filled with love, adorned with carefully selected and cherished items, each with a story to tell.”
Dayle, who was a talented musician, had a collection of rare, vintage guitars and a stack of recording gear in a corner of the home.
Inside was also irreplaceable photos and mementos from childhood, as well as essential documents like passports.
They also had an enormous veggie garden and shared its harvest with friends and family.
Multiple fire crews were called to the blaze but the property couldn’t be saved.
It had all turned to ash.
“Thankfully they were at work, as there was gas canisters in the adjoining shed which blew up. It could have been even more devastating,” Ms Gray said.
She said the pair did not deserve such a setback.
“This tragedy has fallen on two individuals who never lost sight of their dreams. The loss of irreplaceable memories, documents, and cherished belongings is a cruel twist for a couple who, by their very nature, deserved none of this heartbreak.
“They are fighters who deserve a chance to rebuild and continue the beautiful journey they started together.”
Ms Gray has set up a Go Fund Me for the young couple, which has already raised more than $7000.
