A Sunshine Coast hospital has again been criticised for surgery levels, with one staff member revealing they hold concerns something will go “horribly wrong”.
The staff member at Buderim Private Hospital, who wished to remain anonymous, told this publication they feared for patient safety after alleging a large increase in the number of surgeries undertaken each day.
They said over recent months more surgeries had been added to the daily lists, which “starts to get dangerous” as they claim staffing levels remain low.
“It does worry me that something will go horribly wrong,” they said.
“Patients are at risk.”
According to the staff member, when issues have been raised with the hospital “you never hear from them again”.
The latest complaint from a staff member comes after concerns were raised last year regarding the hospital’s practice of carrying out overlapping surgeries.
A leaked notice from the hospital to staff in 2024 showed 13 “improvement measures” after two patients were anaesthetised before their surgeon arrived on the premises.
A spokeswoman for Uniting Care, the company behind Buderim Private Hospital, said the hospital fostered an environment where employees could raise concerns, but denied the hospital had been alerted to the issues told to this publication.
“We have well-established and clearly communicated channels for staff to escalate any concerns, and regularly engage with our teams to seek their feedback and ensure their voices are heard,” the spokeswoman said.
“While we have not heard these concerns from our staff through any of the existing channels, we are committed to listening to and acting on any feedback we receive.
“The health, safety and wellbeing of everyone at Buderim Private Hospital is our number one priority.”
Uniting care did not directly respond to this publication’s questions regarding increased surgeries completed each day.
