One of Brisbane’s traditional water polo powerhouses has flexed their muscle to claim the title of the best women’s school team in the Sunshine State.

St Rita’s College stormed their way to a gold medal at the Water Polo Queensland All Schools Championships in Brisbane.

The unrelenting, heavy-press defence of the St Rita’s side came to the fore in the 13-1 grand final victory over Brisbane Grammar.

St Rita’s wing Tilly Hughes proved her impact both on and off the ball including several slick shots on goal, but the player of the game award belonged to driver Gemma Hutchings whose speed across the water was crucial to the side’s counter-attacking prowess.

It was a one-sided finish to an exciting day in the water at Somerton House which include a thrilling finish in the fight for the Open Girls bronze medal.

It took a full team shoot-out and sudden death shoot-out to finally separate All Hallows and Trinity Lutheran College.

A full stretch save from Trinity Lutheran keeper Mia McVeigh in the sudden death shootout proved crucial before Emma Muir stepped up to ice the victory and secure the bronze medal for the Gold Coast nursery.
