Tiana Rew crowned Australian under 15 boxing champion

A rising Sunshine Coast boxing talent has made her mark after taking out an Australian title against fighters two years older than her.

A rising Sunshine Coast boxing talent has quickly made her mark within the national ring after taking out the U15 Australian title in Melbourne on July 8.

Kawana Waters State College student Tiana Rew, 13, punched well above her weight in the 48kg division to come away with the gold medal.

Rew, who has only been involved in the sport for three years, said the win was a massive achievement.

“I’m pretty proud of myself and hopefully one day I can get to the professional level,” she said.

“There’s just a certain feeling of getting into the ring and I get nervous every time but it’s always nice when you get your hand raised at the end of the fight.”

Rew currently trains four times a week at the Shamrock Boxing Gym in Maroochydore.

Coaches Mike Foley and Kip Daddo said they were proud of Rew.

“I’m stoked for her because she’s got a good boxing intellect and trains her little legs off to make things happen,” Foley said.

“It’s quite easy having her in the gym because she is so motivated, she’s very skilled, still has miles to learn but her improvement already is just out of this world.”

Foley said she was a fighter to keep an eye on for years to come.

“She’s got the skills and she’s a determined competitor so she’s definitely one to watch for sure,” he said.

“I don’t say this lightly because I see a lot in her as I do with Australian boxer Skye Nicolson so I think Tiana will become a very classy fighter.”
