The Sunshine Coast Rugby Union season has come to a close and for the first time ever the competitions senior referees have voted on their top players and performers through the best and fairest award system.
Referees of the A-grade, Reserve Grade, Womens and Colts competitions distributed votes to the top three players in each game for the duration of the 20 round regular season.
We caught up with senior referees Jordan Ryan and Adam Jurisevic to find out who and why certain players received votes.
Men’s A-Grade
1. Luke Kimber (USC Barbarians)
“His biggest and best strength is easily his footy smarts and game IQ,” Ryan said.
“He’s obviously got a heap of skill, a good work ethic and is really strong but the thing that separates him to a lot of players is how he plays his footy.
“He is a real smart footy player and he knows where and how he can be the most effective on the field.”
2. Jordan Mayhew (Noosa Dolphins)
“For someone who isn't massive when running around he seems to always be finishing off a lot of good efforts,” Ryan said.
“The way Noosa played by taking a couple of really quick rucks up the middle and then spreading wide they would usually be hitting Jordan or the other outside backs.
“His biggest strength is he is a really good finisher and if that game plan doesn’t work he is also a really solid option just to take a solid carry.
“I can only imagine that he’s been voted by the other refs because of his presence and skill on the field.”
3. Jock Hanson (Noosa Dolphins)
“Jock’s a keen player and a strong ball carrier with great defensive ability,” Jurisevic said.
“He really is a credit to the team inspiring motivation both on and off the field.”
Hanson was a major loss to the Noosa Dolphins senior side when he was injured in round 14 which sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Reserve Grade
1. Logan Pickering (USC Barbarians)
“An up and coming player through the University ranks and a pleasure to work with this season,” Jurisevic said.
“There’s no doubt he will be a valuable asset to the University a-grade side when his time comes.”
2. Patrick O’Hehir (Maroochydore Swans)
“A competent and well rounded player, leading a well disciplined Swans side this season,” Jurisevic said.
3. Harry Langbridge (Noosa Dolphins)
“A great rational player with a good ability to read a game,” Jurisevic said.
“He’s had many moments of great play making and has made a great addition to the reserve grade side this year.”
Langbridge also featured in 18 matches for the Noosa Dolphins a-grade side this season.
Senior Women
1. Tess Evans (Noosa Dolphins)
2. Taylor Aldridge (Caloundra Lighthouses)
3. Jess Broadhurst (Caloundra Lighthouses)
Colts
1. Leo Langbridge (Noosa Dolphins)
2. Charlie McGovern (Maroochydore Swans)
3. Elijah John (Maroochydore Swans)
