Two Sunshine Coast high schools will compete in the Queensland Schools Premier League grand finals next week in a bid to be crowned the state’s best.
Kawana Waters State College (Junior Girls) and Chancellor State College (Senior Girls) will compete alongside schools from Toowoomba, Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast.
Matches on Friday, November 4, at the Rochedale Football Club will be livestreamed by www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin, Sunshine Coast Daily and News Corp affiliates.
The Sunshine Coast Daily caught up with the teams’ coaches to find out their feelings ahead of their do-or-die match-ups and reveal which players they say are the ones to watch.
Chancellor State College
Senior girls head coach Jeremy Stewart said he was looking forward to seeing his players continue their mighty efforts of the past months.
“The girls have had an awesome season, they’ve gone through undefeated so it’s been a really good reward for the effort they’ve put in,” he said.
“Unfortunately, we do have a number of girls away overseas so we’re a bit down on troops, but we have a senior team made up of girls from Grade 10 to 12,” he said.
As a school across all age divisions, Chancellor State College currently sat in second place of pool b with 15 wins, four draws and 11 losses.
The girls will play top of the table Kelvin Grove at 9.30am Tuesday, November 1 at Murrumba Secondary State College.
Stewart said his midfield trio would be key for their team to come out on top.
“Our midfield three of Macey Edward, who plays for the Sunshine Coast Wanderers women's team, Emily Ferroussat is another key player who plays in the Queensland Academy of Sport under 16s, and Katie Sherar, who is only in Grade 10 but plays for Peninsula Power in their under 23s,” he said.
“Those three together are always strong, along with Victoria Holowko who can take control of the game as well.
“I think for us to have any success they’ll have to be on their game.”
Kawana Waters State College
Football academy co-ordinator and junior girls head coach Adam Walker said his team was looking forward to their match against Kelvin Grove.
“They’ve been a great squad in the last couple of years and we’ve been building up to this with some quality players coming through,” he said
“They’re now hitting Year 9 so they’ve really put it all together and had a great season.
“They’ve been undefeated all the way through the SPL rounds, so coming into finals they’re looking good.
“The girls are definitely looking forward to it, SPL grand finals aren’t easy to come by let alone win but the girls are really excited.”
The junior girls team consisted of players from Years 7, 8 and 9.
Kawana Waters State College sat in fifth place of pool B.
Walker said he hoped his standout players could deliver another impressive performance.
“I’d say there are four key players that fill up the spine of the field, I guess,” he said.
“In the midfield we’ve got Amber Faherty, who’s a QAS player, very strong in the centre midfield, and has just come back from playing Queensland Youth Nationals, so she’s a big integral part of our midfield.
“In the backline we’ve got Abbie Lutton, who’s just so strong at the back (and) holds our backline secure.
“Then up top we’ve got Hailey Paxevanos and Peyton Murray, who are both very quick and exciting to watch in front of goal.”
The girls match would kick off at Rochedale Rovers Football Club on Friday, November 4 at 12.30pm.
