REPLAYS AND REVIEWS

Palm Beach Currumbin v Kelvin Gorge State College (Intermediate Boys A)

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS’s Forbes Porter was a three-goal hero as the Gold Coast boys surged to a 4-1 victory over Kelvin Grove State College in a high-class intermediate grand final.

With a precision header and sublime footwork, he nailed three goals to take his side from a 1-all cliffhanger to the front of the pack, 4-1.

It was a great final and the match could have gone either way despite PBC SHS’s scoreboard advantage - that was until Porter’s third goal.

With Kelvin Grove pushing numbers up looking to score, PBC SHS’s Jed Thelwall counterattacked, giving Porter the half chance he was able to convert, pushing the score out to 4-1.

“For the first 30 minutes we were not in it and Kelvin Grove played us off the park,’’ said PBC SHS coach Shane Robinson.

“Then we changed a couple of things and I was so proud of the boys, how they showed courage.

“They went through the season undefeated and the way they worked as a group, they deserved it.’’

Man of the match was Roman Culina.

Kelvin Grove played to the death, and only a superlative save by PBC SHS keeper Bean Ross-Mitchell prevented the margin from tightening.

Kelvin Grove State College had scored first in the opening half, but by halftime PBC had drawn level courtesy of a splendid goal from the classy James Durtrington.

Marsden v Cleveland (Intermediate Boys B)

Cleveland District State High School goalkeeper Zach Cornford was the hero as his side mounted an amazing come from behind penalty shootout victory over Marsden in the intermediate boys decider.

Cornford saved successive shots to win the match for his side after Cleveland had slipped behind in the early stages of the shoot out.

He was swamped by jubilant teammates, his bright green jersey disappearing beneath a swarm of maroon shirts.

He was actually a hero two times over.

Just seconds from normal time ending, Cornford produced the save of the day as Marsden SHS honed in on the winner.

A renowned futsal goalie, he did the splits to prevent his team going 2-1 down just as the referee was about to blow fulltime.

Cleveland coach Garrett McDuling said while Cornford was a hero at the end, “the moral of the story is that they were all heroes’’ for the resilience his side displayed after trailing 1-0 in the match and again 1-0 in the penalty shootout.

There was also a dramatic moment when Marsden were awarded a penalty, but Australian representative Isiah Quinn’s set shot low to the keeper’s left was saved by that man Cornford.

The man of the match was Cleveland’s Sam Bush.

Earlier, in the first half, Marsden SHS opened the scoring courtesy of Aryan Chakraborty who stayed out of a pack of players which had gathered for an attacking corner.

He sat out the back and the ball rebounded his way, giving him a clean strike which Cornford could not save.

But Cleveland levelled not long after, with Kane Engerman finding the net from a distance.

While he did not strike it absolutely plumb, contact was enough to send his side to 1-1.

Kawana Waters v Kelvin Grove (Junior Girls A)

Kawana Waters State College claimed a stunning penalty shootout grand final win over Kelvin Grove State College after the scores were locked 0-0 at fulltime.

Goalkeeper and the Global Players Pathways official Player of the Match Hailey Paxevanos, was part of an awesome foursome, which included Olivia Clarke, Peyton Murray and Kiah Cox who all nailed their penalty shootout set shots, while Kelvin Grove missed two shots.

“The girls had a great season, undefeated right through to the final,’’ said Kawana Waters coach Adam Walker.

“It was very tough conditions, very windy, and Kelvin Grove came out to win the game and challenged us right through until the end.

“The penalty shoot out was a coach killer, but you could see the girls were ready for it and they came away with the win.’’

It was a remarkable triumph for Kawana Waters’s goalie Paxevanos and her defensive comrades after Kelvin Grove dominated territory prior to fulltime.

Running with the wind, Kelvin Grove camped themselves on the attacking side of halfway, dominating the opening half with Lili Reynolds, Sophie Colen, Lauren McMahon and Cate Morrison dangerous.

Morrison unleashed three left foot drives which marginally missed their mark, while Kawana Waters’ Lucie Read saved a certain goal with a strong tackle when McMahon took the ball to the brink of the box.

And at one stage in the second half McMahon twice fired shots at goals, and twice the ball rebounded off the legs of astute Kawana keeper Hailey Paxevanos.

The Kawana backline crew of Abbie Lutton, Read, Alex Schlotterbach and Amber Faherty were terrific in support of their goalkeeper, and they had to be, such was the concerted pressure Kelvin Grove placed on them.

“They (his defenders) were working all the way right through to the end and battled it out right to the end,’’ Walker said.

Corinda v Murrumba (Junior Girls B)

Murrumba State Secondary have escaped with a 3-2 win to win the Junior Girls B competition.

Murrumba opened the scoring with a textbook finish before Rani Sharma nailed the equaliser for Corinda in the 24th minute, belting it past the goalkeeper who had rushed up in an all or nothing play.

A sensational ball from Prinnie Proctor made it possible, but Larissa Bullock made it a sure thing with a deft touch to give Sharma the shot with just enough time and space to execute.

Murrumba then slotted a spectacular free kick from range, a top left corner special to get even Corinda fans on their feet. The fact it was on the halftime siren made it all the more dramatic.

Murrumba drew further in front at 3-1 with an expert finish in the 35th minute.

But Corinda immediately hit back. Georgina Robertson couldn’t have picked her target better, putting in a superb ball to Alex Horvath.

Corinda tried and tried but Murrumba had all the answers.

Kelvin Grove v Helensvale (Junior Boys A)

Replay: Queensland Schools Premier League grand finals - Kelvin Grove v Helensvale (Junior Boys A)

Kelvin Grove State State College have taken out the Junior Boys Pool A grand final match with a touch of class, running away 3-1 winners over Helensvale SHS.

If ever there was a standout, it was the tall, athletic Rahul Dewan, but it was Nash Montgomery who connected from distance to slot an incredible opening goal.

After both teams battled back and forth, an orange booted Aiziea Lee struck with his left to make it 2-0. Lee didn’t even use a touch to control the ball, instead he steered it in magnificently off a brilliant aerial through ball.

Zak Boyd had just the answer for Helensvale. A 28th minute tap in drawing his side closer at 2-1 just before the break.

Boyd continued to show his class throughout the match, out-muscling his opponents not once, but twice to steal possession.

Kelvin Grove’s game management was top tier, their passes were crisp and, under no circumstances, did they buckle under pressure.

They charged ahead 3-1 in the 50th minute courtesy of Ashton Burrowes. This one was a crowd favourite, as Burrowes was met with a roar in the left corner by his school friends, who were cheering passionately knowing their mate may have just scored the dagger.

And indeed he did, with the boys in red holding out all comeback efforts by Helensvale to clinch a brilliant grand final victory.

Corinda v Marsden, Junior Boys B

Marsden SHS overcame Corinda SHS 3-0 in the Junior Boys Pool B grand final game.

A masterclass by the attackers, paired with the playmaking ability of the back three, ensured a dazzling showcase at the Rochedale Rovers Football Club.

Marsden’s Taj Sorrensen was awarded man of the match but it was a team effort that saw captain Ethan Sharma and his teammates lift the trophy.

What a contest it was. In the early stages, the dangermen of Marsden asserted themselves. The elegant touch of centre back Steven Gisubizo and the mix of aggression and go forward from fullback Elijh Berrios-Todd caused a few problems for Corinda.

Speedy attacker Emmanuel Samai and his partner in crime, Winner Mukuta, combined well when surging up the field and threatening the last line of defence.

But Corinda goalkeeper Will Ledez stood tall and made a cracking save, diving to his left to keep out a powerful strike by Mukuta.

But the scores didn’t stay locked at 0-0 for long, with a phenomenal dish from Ethan Sharma setting up Gisubizo to score with a brilliant header.

Mukuta stretched Marsden’s lead with a classy left-foot-finish thanks to a soft touch by Nawid Qasimi to give him an open look from close range, bu it was Samai who delivered a fantastic free kick to put his teammates in the box seat to score.

Marsden was not finished. Indeed they had another screamer in them.

This time, only moments after goal number two, Qasimi aced a superb ball over the top of the defence to Masudi Isiaka, settling the scores at 3-0 in an emphatic grand final win.
