Sunshine Coast batsman Nick Selman has tasted sweet success and a slice of history after helping Welsh side Glamorgan claim its first 50 overs trophy after more than half a century.
Selman, 25, anchored a 106-run partnership for the second wicket against Durham Cricket Club to secure Glamorgan’s maiden Royal London Cup at Trent Bridge.
The Sunshine Coast Scorcher chipped in with 36 as Glamorgan finished its allotted overs with a commanding 296.
Durham were bowled out for 238 to hand Glamorgan it’s first one day title in 58 years and its first piece of silverware since 2004.
Selman finished as the competition’s fourth-highest run scorer with 421 at an average of 52.62, just shy of England test great Alastair Cook.
He said he would throw away all the individual spoils away for the premiership.
“It’s one of the best feelings I’ve personally had in cricket, the runs are just a bonus,” Selman said.
“Durham are a great side and I think we were underdogs, but we played the best cricket on the day.
“It was an unreal feeling.”
Selman, now in his sixth season at Glamorgan, was the Welsh side’s highest run scorer for the campaign with a century and twin 50s.
He said playing professional cricket in England had been a boyhood dream.
“It’s just great playing any sort of pro cricket and there’s serious players here,” he said.
“Going up against someone like Alastair Cook and just testing yourself against him. Even just watching him is unreal.”
While Selman had been forced into isolation after three of his teammates were diagnosed with Covid-19 following some well-deserved celebrations his spirits remained high.
He will finish the 4-day season matches with Glamorgan before coming home to link back with the Sunshine Coast Scorchers.
“I love playing in the UK but you can’t beat coming home and a summer on the Sunshine Coast,” he said.
“I think with Eddo Brandes coming on as the new head coach and Jimmy Henry as director of cricket it’s exciting times for the club.”
