Nambour Yandina United seal maiden premiership in style

Nambour Yandina United’s trophy cabinet which has sat bare for almost half a century will soon house the club’s maiden piece of silverware.

Nambour Yandina United celebrate title

Just three years after picking up the wooden spoon and a Sunshine Coast hinterland football club is celebrating securing its first piece of major silverware.

Nambour-Yandina United technical director and midfielder Korey Nix said the club’s drought breaking premiership went a long way to making up for all the club’s heartbreaking near misses.

The Reds claimed the premiers’ plate in the Sunshine Coast Premier League in style with a dominant 7-2 win over Kawana Force last weekend.

The club never tasted a first division title or grand final silverware since its competition debut as the Nambour Reds in 1974.

United, a merger of Nambour Reds and Yandina Eagles in 1997, had lost finals in 1977, 2000 and in 2019 endured double heartbreak having finished second in the league before losing the grand final.

Technical director and midfielder Korey Nix said the victory hadn’t quite sunk in.

“I’ve been at the club six seasons, but I don’t think we can fathom being apart of something for 47 years,” Nix said.

“There’s been enough ups and downs, near misses and maybes in six years, let alone 47.

“My brother Kallum said it means more than we realise.

“It’s a bit of a weight off people’s minds who felt like they could have done it but didn’t quite do it. This is for all of them.”

The Reds will be presented with the premiership trophy in the final round of the regular season at home to Noosa Lions.

“We are hoping for a big celebration and coming together for everyone, it should be really special,” he said.

NYU dropped just eight points from its 17 games throughout the season to be six points clear with one game remaining.

The title came just three seasons after the side finished dead last in 2018.

Nix said the club will aim to complete the double come finals.

“I love playing finals and we definitely want to win it but I do feel winning the league is more of an accomplishment,” he said.

“Traditionally it means the most being the most consistent all year. You don’t win the league by coincidence, you deserve it.

“Whereas anything can happen in a finals series.”
