Goals galore: Wooden spoon shrugged off in United resurgence

Nambour Yandina United scored 24 goals in a blunt 2018 campaign but this year sit in third place with the best attack in the league.

FOOTBALL: Nambour Yandina United are buzzing, enjoying a resurgence brought about by free-flowing, attack-minded football.

Players are smiling in training and on the pitch, the feeling of confidence that went missing last year has returned.

The goals are flying in.

Last year's Premier Men's wooden spooners found the back of the net just 24 times last season. After eight games they've scored a competition-high 31 goals.

An influx of quality has helped no doubt.

"Scoring goals breeds more scoring, where as if you miss it becomes a habit,” coach Korey Nix said.

"We finished bottom last year but our defence wasn't leaky. We just weren't scoring.

"Our 4-3-3 system hasn't changed, it's more of a belief thing.”

Up front, long-time club player Jono Harth has cashed in with nine goals, trailing by one goal to Woombye Snakes prolific marksman Luke Alderson.

New signing Josh Sansucie has added venom in attack.

But Nix said if anyone embodied NYU's bounce back, it was Harth.

"He's a player who's often been in and out of the team, we've all seen his potential, but I'm not sure he did.

"We know what he is capable and he is realising his own potential. He has great feet, he's strong, quick and can finish.

"Consistency was a problem but he believes now. You just have to look at his reaction when he does miss, he is kicking himself cause he knows he can do better.”

NYU will look to continue its free-flowing start to the season when they meet Gympie United on Saturday.

It will be the first time Nix goes up against his brother Kyle, who coaches the fourth-placed Gympie.

Tonight, Coolum host Beerwah Glasshouse, while Noosa take on Kawana. Caloundra face Woombye on Thursday. Buderim play Maroochydore before the Nix boys clash on Saturday.
