Coast young guns Maggie Harmer and Bella Smith are excited to be entering the virtual AFLW draft on Tuesday night

Two Coast teenagers will gear up for arguably the biggest moment of their sporting career when they attend the AFLW draft on Tuesday night.

Former Noosa Tigers and now Maroochydore Roos players Maggie Harmer, 18, and Bella Smith, 17, have been focused on draft night for quite some time.

The pair most recently represented Queensland at 2021 NAB National U19 Championships and Harmer was further selected in the U19 All-Australian team.

Harmer, who predominantly plays at half back said she’s feeling a range of different emotions leading into the draft.

“I’m very excited but also very nervous leading into it all,” she said.

“I would be thrilled if I heard my name called and it would just be the icing on the cake.”

Smith, who generally plays as a midfielder, said she is hoping to see all of her hard work come together on Tuesday night.

“I think I have done all I can heading into draft night especially with the distractions of Covid-19,” Smith said.

“It’s been my dream ever since I was a kid and is something that I’ve been aiming at for quite a while now.”

Both girls attended the AFLW Draft Combine in Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast last week and Harmer said it was a unique experience.

“It was nerve racking as I’m not the biggest fan of those types of tests but I did my best and I feel as if I did better than I expected,” she said.

This year's AFLW event will be a virtual draft due to the restrictions of Covid-19.

Smith said the nerves and excitement are yet to take control.

“I feel as if it hasn't fully kicked in just yet but I know I’ll be extremely excited once it all begins,” she said.

The Coast has already seen a number of players take the leap into both the AFL and AFLW competitions.

In particular former Roo and now Brisbane Lions player Belle Dawes who was selected 15th overall in the 2019 draft.

Harmer said she’s looking forward to draft night and is hoping to hear her name called.

“There’s a lot of girls going for it so I’ll have to wait and see if I’m drafted but I’ll definitely have my fingers and toes crossed,” she said.

The 2021 draft will be held on July 27 at 6.45pm and will available to watch through the AFL and AFLW website.
