A horse has been euthanised and its jockey is in the hospital with several injuries after he fell during a Sunshine Coast Turf Club race.

Spectators watched on in horror as rider Vishan Venkaya fell to the ground from the Des Trindall-trained Spiritual during the BR Solicitors Maiden Plate 1800m on Monday.

Livestreaming from Racing Queensland showed Mr Venkaya fall from Spiritual in the last 100m of the race.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics rushed to Pierce Ave in Little Mountain to treat the 34-year-old rider.

The spokeswoman said the Mr Venkaya suffered chest and lower limb injuries and was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

It’s believed he had suffered a broken leg and fractured rib from the fall.

Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner Shane Gillard said a thorough inquiry will be held into the circumstances of the race.

“Jockey Vishan Venkaya was seriously injured when he was dislodged from his mount and was transported to hospital,” Mr Gillard said.

“His mount Spiritual suffered a broken shoulder and was humanely euthanised.”

Mr Gillard said their thoughts were with Mr Venkaya and his family for a speedy recovery, and as well as with those connected to Spiritual.

“In the same race shortly after the start Game Star bucked and shifted out making heavy contact with the outside fence dislodging jockey Melea Castle,” he said.

“While she was stood down from her further ride [on Monday], she was otherwise well.

“Game Star suffered a laceration to its near front leg and as a result of hitting its head on the fence bled from both nostrils and the filly was treated by the on-course vet.”

The Queensland Jockeys Association has been contacted for comment.

Mr Trindall declined to comment about Monday’s incident.

Mr Venkaya was previously injured after a fall on the Gold Coast in 2018.
