THE thrill of riding a malibu only a year younger than himself is pretty hard to top for surfer Dave Maxwell.
It could be argued time had been kinder to the mint condition, 9 foot 7 inch board shaped in 1967 by Bill Wallace than it had been to its Alexandra Headland Malibu Club vice president owner.
Mr Maxwell said he "made up the numbers” in the old mal division of the club's Winter Longboard Classic at the weekend.
"It's unreal and it is becoming so popular,” Mr Maxwell said of the event, now in its 37th year.
He loved being able give life to a vintage malibu, which he bought about five months ago for a sum he was unwilling to disclose in case his wife found out.
"It's about bringing the old boards out and feeling how they used to do it in the old days.
"It's just such a good feeling on the old mals.”
Club president Kevin Annetts was happy with the turnout across the three-day event.
"We've had great weather, we've had fantastic waves and today at the finals we have probably seen some of the best longboard surfing ever at Alexandra Headland,” Mr Annetts said on Sunday.
