Paul Robson has left Noosa Dolphins after just five matches as the A-grade head coach, saying he felt like an “outsider” at the “cliquey” club.

The rugby union club confirmed it had parted ways with the coach following mixed results in 2023 with one win, one draw and three losses in opening rounds.

Robson, who was appointed in October 2022, said he felt he never found his place at the club.

“I would probably say it’s due to a lot of politics,” he said.

“I was an outsider and didn’t fit in the club to be honest.

“It’s a very political, cliquey-claque club but my departure was mutual.”

Senior club president Jon ‘Jerry’ Lewis said a decision was made on May 31 to part ways with Robson.

“Whilst it was not a decision made lightly, especially being mid season, I am satisfied it is the right thing for the club,” Lewis said.

“Assistant coaches Mark Winder and Ryan Frisby remain part of the coaching team and we are very fortunate to have multi-premiership winning coach Michael Phelan making himself available to take on the role of A-grade head coach for the remainder of this season.

“Our players, coaches, sponsors and supporters are committed to and looking forward to a strong performance as we move into the second half of the season.”

Phelan last coached the senior men’s side in 2020 and his resume consists of six A-grade premierships through his 12 years in various stints as coach.

The team has a bye in round seven before taking on the bottom of the table Maroochydore in round eight.
