A single mum who is desperate to find a house on the Sunshine Coast for her three kids has had to move in with her sister in Caboolture to keep a roof over her family’s head.

National Homeless Week

A single mother of three is devastated she has had to pack up her “whole life” and move away from everything she’s ever known after she was pushed out of the rental market on Sunshine Coast.

Amy Mollet was told in late July she would have to move out of her Mountain Creek home because the owners were increasing the rent.

She offered to pay the $60 increase but still was told to pack up her bags because her lease wouldn’t be renewed.

“I wasn’t even given the option to try and to afford the extra rent,” Ms Mollet said.

“I’m a single parent with three kids, I would have done it to keep a roof over my kids head.”

She’s one of many residents who have been caught up in the ongoing affordable housing crisis.

The Daily this week is launching a campaign to find better outcomes for people like Ms Mollet.

Having grown up on the Coast, Ms Mollet said she’s been struggling to find anywhere to live and had to make the difficult choice to move away.

“I feel I’ve been pushed out, it’s not a nice feeling especially in my home town,” she said.

Ms Mollet said she applied for “well over 100 houses” in the region.

She’s now temporarily living with her sister’s family in Caboolture while she looks for something suitable hopefully on the Coast but she’s desperate for anything at this point.

“It’s disheartening, you kind of feel you’re failing as a parent like you’ve done something wrong and you just feel useless.

“I’ll sacrifice things for it to put a roof over my kids heard, that’s the main thing I want secure a home something they can call home and something safe.”

Ms Mollet said moving her children away from their father, friends and family was the last thing she wanted but she had no other choice as she continues to “keep hitting a wall” as she searches for a rental.

She said more needed to be done to help single parents like her.

“They don’t do much for single parenting, I think there should be more options like more affordable housing, even if its in town housing complex or there’s more housing commission,” Ms Mollet said.

“Some people don’t need the whole big yard and white picket fence, they just need something small and liveable for their kids.”

Despite being unemployed, Ms Mollet said even with her dad and step mum going guarantor on rental applications and never having missed a rent payment, she still can’t find anywhere to live.

“I think they need to be giving us people more chance, I know our wages aren’t the best but we sacrifice for our kids,” she said.

“I’ve got good references, I’ve paid my rent but yet you feel hopeless but there’s nothing you can do but try.”
