The search for the Sunshine Coast’s most attractive tradie of 2024 has concluded, with a fit mechanic taking claim of the title.
Sunshine Coast mechanic Simon Hayes, 44, won the poll among 154 other nominees, snatching 17 of nearly 200 votes.
Jackson Kite, likening 2023’s poll, came in second this year and Declan Davis was voted third.
Mr Hayes has been running his mobile business Coast2Car Mobile Vehicle Servicing for the past eight years.
The chiseled mechanic was nominated - unbeknownst to him - by his wife Katy Hayes who said in a comment she put forward her “handsome hubby” for a “more mature” audience.
Mr Hayes said he “didn’t know anything about it” until his Sydney-based daughter sent a post to him flaunting his picture.
One of his customers also tagged him.
A Sunshine Coast friend of his daughter sent her the post, informing her that her father had been featured in the paper.
Mr Hayes noted many of the votes would have come from his pool of 1000 or so regular customers.
“(It’s) been a lot of fun, been a lot of recognition,” he said.
He and Ms Hayes had “a good laugh about it” and thought it would be fun as his chances of winning looked up.
The mechanic said he 100 per cent deserved the win after working out for 4o years of his life.
“I deserve something at some point,” he said.
“I don’t really know what the competition was like, I didn’t really look too much into it.
He had told his wife it was fine to do what she had to.
“Just don’t embarrass me,” Mr Hayes joked.
Mr Hayes said surfing became a big part of his lifestyle when he moved from North England to Australia in 2012.
Feeling he was lacking some fitness, Mr Hayes soon started calisthenics at home, and most recently joined his youngest son at the gym.
Outside of the gym, Mr Hayes said he also enjoyed biking on trails and often used a stunt bike, in addition to surfing.
Mr Hayes said he had a spanner in his hand since he was nine years old, with his father and brother also working as mechanics.
He underwent an apprenticeship when he was 16, and worked through dealerships when he first moved to Australia.
