A Brisbane man has been ordered to pay nearly $2000 in restitution after he broke into a Noosa caravan park and stole a safe filled with valuable items.
Shane Phillip George Bellamy was highly medicated at the time of the offence when he and an unknown co-offender broke into the office of Noosa River Caravan Park on December 20, 2020.
The 59-year-old pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday to entering the premises and committing an indictable offence of stealing.
At 3am on the December date, Bellamy and his co-offender gained entry to the office building by manipulating a side door, the court heard.
Police prosecutor Alison Johnstone said they then removed a safe that was bolted to the wall.
“Together they were seen walking from the office dragging a trolley behind them with the safe on it,” Sergeant Johnstone said.
“The following morning, the manager reported the matter to police and it was investigated.”
On January 30, 2021, police searched Bellamy’s Zillmere address and found the destroyed safe in his shed.
Inside was $1319 cash, business documents and handheld radios.
Two credit cards that were also in the safe had previously been handed in to police by Bellamy’s ex-housemate who found them inside a book.
When Bellamy was questioned by police, he claimed to have no knowledge of the matter and appeared very genuine in his recollection, Sergeant Johnstone said.
The court heard Bellamy was taking “a lot” of Valium at the time of the offence, which he said was “all a blur”.
Bellamy was ordered to pay a total of $1967 in restitution and was placed on a good behaviour bond for 12 months, to pay $1000 if he breaks the bond.
A conviction was recorded.
