A Brisbane man is in custody after he allegedly stole a beach buggy from a surf club before he was wrestled to the ground by lifeguards on the Sunshine Coast.
Police allege Sam Oliver Layton was under the influence of a liquor or drug when he stole a beach vehicle at Alexandra Headland beach on Friday, June 28.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said officers were called to the beach about 1pm to reports a 36-year-old man was allegedly driving dangerously on the shore near beachgoers.
The spokeswoman alleged the Fortitude Valley man was restrained by members of the public after Layton crashed and damaged the buggy.
He was charged with threatening violence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, public nuisance and driving under the influence of a liquor or drug.
Layton’s matters were briefly mentioned in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday where duty lawyer Michael Robinson asked for a lengthy adjournment to allow for the Fortitude Valley man’s Legal Aid application to be processed.
He was remanded in custody and will appear in court again on July 17.
Instagram videos of Layton’s arrest were awash with commentary on Sh-t Maroochydore’s page at the weekend.
