The state premier and his deputy made time for a quick tipple at a popular Sunshine Coast brewery as they highlighted the importance of celebrating Queensland Day.

Queensland Day is the June 6 and marks the 166th anniversary of the modern State of Queensland.

Premier David Crisafulli said the Queensland Day Local Legend and All The Best nominations allow Queenslanders to celebrate their community and exceptional people.

Seven hundred Queenslanders have been nominated as a Local Legend and there are 30,000 “best of” nominations across the state.

“We want the opportunity to acknowledge the unsung heroes,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“Some of the nominations include people who volunteer at local sporting clubs and community groups and people who feed the homeless.”

“In particular, the people who work with the SES during a very difficult summer.

“They go run towards a new disaster every time when others need that help.

“Right now, some of them are working across the border to help our friends in New South Wales through a very difficult period of time, as they helped us.

“Of course tonight on the field we’ll give them the hiding they deserve, but off the field we remain great friends.”

Deputy Premier and Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie said they wanted to highlight the success story of one of the Sunshine Coast nominees, Your Mates Brewery.

“I’ve seen this business grow from strength to strength to where we are now and there aren’t many pubs in Australia where you won’t see their beer,” he said.

Brewery owners Matt Hepburn and Christen McGarry did not know they were nominated before the deputy premier announced it to the press and said they were honoured and shocked.

The two friends started brewing in a back shed in Moffat Beach in their early 20s and Mr Bleijie said “they’ve put the Sunshine Coast on the map.”
