A block of land at Cooroy once owned by a prominent businessman and IGA franchisee has been sold by a Brisbane developer to supermarket giant Woolworths.

The 6.6ha block of land at 125 Myall Street which sits adjacent to the Bruce Highway and Cooroy Golf Club was purchased by Woolworths’ property arm Fabcot Pty Ltd.

It had been formerly owned by Creekgold Pty Ltd, the company of Cooroy businessman Peter Zipf.

Mr Zipf owns the Cooroy and Pomona Supa IGAs.

Woolworths regional development manager Savannah Powell confirmed the sale and said the company would consult the community on future plans.

CoreLogic data showed the land sold for $5,720,000 after settling on May 11.

Anthony Zipf, on behalf of his father, said the land had been zoned for an aged care facility.

“We sold it to a developer who intended to put an aged care facility on the site, then they decided to on sell the block to Woolworths,” Mr Zipf said.

Mr Zipf did not comment on his thoughts on the sale or what it would mean for business in the future.

Woolworths had started planning for site and was set to propose a mix of uses including a new full-line supermarket with a drive through and pick-up facility, speciality retail, new carparking and other uses depending on local needs.

“Our vision is to create a high quality shopping and community destination that complements the village feel of Cooroy while enhancing convenience for local residents - many of whom currently drive to Tewantin, Noosaville or Peregian Springs to shop in a full-line supermarket,” Ms Powell said.

“We welcome community interest in our plans and will shortly be commencing a comprehensive engagement process with both community and stakeholders to inform our future plans for this site.

“We look forward to speaking to as many local residents as possible.”

Woolworths will begin its community consultation phase in August.

Ms Powell said the development would create hundreds of ongoing and construction employment opportunities.
