A beachfront mansion at Dicky Beach which locals dubbed the “super IGA” during construction has been named the Sunshine Coast’s home of the year.

Wilson Beach House at Dicky Beach won the major prize at the Sunshine Coast Master Builders 2023 Housing and Construction Awards with judges describing it as a “concrete masterpiece”.

The home was initially suspected to become a supermarket or car park by the community, and Dicky Beach shopkeepers had dubbed it the “super IGA” due to the scale of construction.

Nick Hayes Constructions was awarded house of the year and best residential kitchen for homes over $10m for its work on the mega-mansion.

The “intergenerational resort-style beach house” was designed by architect Charles Wright with a focus on low maintenance and durability.

“Maximising ocean views, this timeless contemporary design is an entertainer’s dream with the ability to create multiple zones that can transform into one large open space to host guests,” a Sunshine Coast Master Builders spokesman said.

“Extensive ecological requirements needed to be considered during the construction of this incredible concrete structure with a long-life cycle being the primary design philosophy.”

The property has an underground parking area with a glass lift as well as a massive lap pool, gym, basketball court and even a bowling area.

The judges said no expenses were spared, and that any person staying in the home “would not be found wanting” with all facilities provided within the home.

“The builder’s technical ability and approach to finding innovative ways to incorporate services within the construction of an all-off-form concrete internal structure is evident throughout the build,” judges said.

“A magnificent job bringing it all together in such challenging times.”
