SEA breezes saved coastal residents from a steaming Friday but a mixed bag of weather looms in the final days before Christmas.

Nambour and Tewantin had both struck 34C by this afternoon and inland areas were tipped to get even hotter.

But sea breezes came to cool the coastal fringe.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Harry Clark said there was a chance of storms rolling in on Saturday, as a southerly change brought with it the risk of "quite severe” storms in parts.

The most severe weather was expected to affect Brisbane and the Gold Coast, but Mr Clark said it was possible severe storm cells could hit the region.

"It's still going to be quite warm and humid,” he said.

Mr Clark said heavy winds, hail and rainfall of 8-25mm were all possible on Saturday, which was set to have maximum temperatures in the low-to-mid 30s.

Sunday was expected to be more stable, with the possibility of a few showers.

Luckily the heat was set to dissipate from Sunday, with maximum temperatures back to 27C and the humidity a lot lower.

Brisk south-easterly winds will whip up on Monday but they'll die off by Christmas Day.
