Sunshine Coast Police will be out in force this New Year’s Eve to keep the community safe.

The celebration come with its fair share of risks to make the “busiest night of the year” for police.

An increased and visible police presence can be expected across entertainment hotspots such as Hastings Street, Noosa, Mooloolaba Esplanade and Ocean Street, Maroochydore.

Noosa Council encouraged people to take the free bus and avoid driving as several car parks will be closed on Hastings Street for emergency service access.

Mooloolaba Esplanade will also have road closures in place for the fireworks.

Police will be increasing random breath tests as part of the continuing Operation Mistletoe, a statewide road safety blitz.

Yesterday, the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Dan Purdie, revealed that 302 people have died on Queensland roads in 2024.

95 per cent of these deaths have been caused by speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead and seek alternative modes of transport as thousands of people navigate the roads.

Queensland Police have provided the following New Year’s Eve safety tips:

  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. If you feel threatened or find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, leave immediately and go to a place where you feel safe.
  • Use public transport or taxis where possible and be patient with other commuters waiting for these services.
  • Trust your instincts and recognise warning signs.
  • Develop a network of people who will assist you in an emergency and let them know where you are going and when you are likely to return.
  • Look after your friends.
  • Consider the necessity of the items you are carrying in your handbag or wallet and try to keep valuables to a minimum.
  • Plan ahead as to how many drinks you will have and stick to the plan by monitoring your drinking.
  • Book a taxi or designate a driver to ensure you and your friends get home safely.
  • Eat before and while you are drinking.
  • Alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at a sensible pace.
  • Avoid mixing drinks and finish each drink before you have another.
  • Do not leave drinks unattended.
  • If someone offers to buy you a drink, go up to the bar with that person and accept the drink there.
  • People are advised to call triple-0 in emergency situations.
