A Sunshine Coast father has copped two fines after a bystander rescue that went “pear-shaped” in Maroochydore landed him in court.

Trent Leo Bellchambers, 44, appeared in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday, August 14 where he faced two charges for common assault and obstructing police.

The father-of-two pleaded guilty to both charges.

Solicitor Anna Smith told the court Bellchambers had been trying to console a young person he saved from self-harm on Duporth Ave when he was charged with obstructing police.

“Mr Bellchambers and his partner have gone to the assistance of this young person who was saying he was going to self-harm,” Ms Smith said.

“That person has jumped off the bridge at Duporth Ave and Mr Bellchambers has ran and got him out from the water.

“They were sitting with him, Mr Bellchambers had his arms around this young person, police came and everything went pear-shaped.”

Ms Smith said Bellchambers was filming the police with his phone, which resulted in the obstruction charge.

“His and his partner’s intentions at that time were good, they were consoling this young person when everything went pear-shaped when the police came and started to pull this person away,” Ms Smith said.

Police prosecutor Nick Nitschke told the court the common assault was in relation to an incident where Bellchambers assaulted a 21-year-old employee at the Sneaky Baron. There were no injuries reported.

In regards to the common assault charge Ms Smith told the court Bellchambers had misinterpreted the victim and pre-emptively struck him with one punch.

“He realises that was the wrong thing to do, it was one punch and fortunately, both for him and the complainant, there were no injuries,” Ms Smith said.

Maroochydore Magistrate Rod Madsen told the court Bellchambers was “very fortunate” no injuries had resulted from the common assault.

Bellchambers was fined $1000 for the common assault and $350 for the obstruction of police.

No convictions were recorded.
