A woman caused a scene at Caloundra Magistrates Court on Thursday, clashing with security guards before pleading guilty to a string of charges, including assault, theft, and driving while disqualified.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Potter was in the middle of a hearing when a court employee entered to request his assistance with a woman, later identified as Tia Louise Collier, who was reportedly causing a scene and struggling with two security guards outside of the courtroom.
By the time Sergeant Potter arrived, Collier had been restrained by the female security guards, her arms locked behind her back.
The guards repeatedly told Collier to “just stop”, but she continued to shout angrily, yelling, “let go of my arm, you stupid s--t … let go of my arm, you f-----g piece of s--t”.
Sergeant Potter remained calm and directed Collier to follow him into a nearby conference room for a discussion.
Though the cause of her outburst was unclear, it appeared her frustration was directed towards at least one of the guards.
After the commotion settled, Collier entered the courtroom for her scheduled hearing.
She faced 13 charges, including assault occasioning bodily harm, wilful damage, stealing, driving while disqualified, and trespassing.
Addressing the situation, Sergeant Potter informed Magistrate Raelene Ellis of the disruption, requesting a two-week adjournment for Collier’s matters due to heightened emotions.
“Emotions are high in respect to something that went on outside the court,” Sergeant Potter said.
However, Magistrate Ellis decided to proceed with Collier’s guilty pleas.
Collier admitted guilt to several offences from 2024, including stealing from FoodWorks in Burnside on October 20, contravening police instructions by failing to identify herself in Caloundra on November 10, stealing petrol from BP Glenview on November 11, and failing to surrender to police in Maroochydore on November 27.
She also pleaded guilty to multiple charges of driving while disqualified, with incidents in Landsborough, Forest Glen, Glenview, and Beerwah throughout October and November 2024.
She also pleaded guilty to possessing a dangerous drug, which she described as an “acid tab,” and to assaulting another woman on August 16, 2024.
She also admitted to wilfully damaging car windows in Beerwah on November 1, 2024.
Collier contested one charge related to a theft on October 2, 2024, at Fresh and Save Beerwah, where she allegedly stole a drink.
Collier acknowledged trespassing at the supermarket, having been previously banned, but denied stealing the drink.
She explained she had gone there because other supermarkets were closed.
Ms Ellis accepted her plea of guilty to trespassing and ordered a brief of evidence to be prepared for the stealing charge, with a return date set for March 20, 2025.
After the hearing, Collier was observed having a brief conversation with two police officers outside the courthouse.
A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed authorities were called to the courthouse in response to reports of a disturbance, and the woman was asked to leave the premises.
The spokesman added that the incident appeared to have stemmed from a verbal altercation.
