A routine traffic stop along a popular Noosa glitter strip ended in handcuffs for a 49-year-old Doonan man found with several bags of cocaine after a night on the pokies.

Australia's cocaine crisis

A 49-year-old Doonan man wrestled with cops in a desperate attempt to stop them finding his cocaine bags after a routine traffic stop in Noosa Heads.

Police spotted Terry Gordon Macalpine driving along Hastings St about 4.25am on April 17 when he was pulled over for a random breath test.

Noosa Magistrates Court heard Macalpine had been playing the pokies at the Reef Hotel before he was intercepted and appeared nervous to police.

Police prosecutor James Allen said a search of Macalpine’s pocket uncovered a used syringe.

When officers continued to search Macalpine he became aggressive and had to be restrained and taken to the ground.

Police then found three small bags of cocaine weighing 5.59g.

Mr Allen said scales, a glass pipe, marijuana seeds and drug utensils were also found in the car.

The court heard Macalpine had a history of drug trafficking and fell back into addiction after the loss of a family member.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said Macalpine had “decades” of experience with drug culture.

Macalpine pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing drugs, one of driving suspended, failing to dispose of a needle, obstruct police, possess property used in the commission of a drug crime, possessing utensils, and breaching bail.

He was fined $3050 and disqualified from driving for one month.

Convictions were recorded.
