Each month a long list of drink drivers face Sunshine Coast courts for choosing to drive after consuming substantial amounts of alcohol.
In the Maroochydore Magistrates Court and Noosa Magistrates Court over the past month several residents with high readings were forced to face the consequences for their actions.
From a drunk Warana man who was “speaking in riddles” after being pulled over to a hospitality worker busted driving drunk after his farewell party, these are the high level drink drivers from February exposed.
CONVICTED
Jasmin Stephenson
A Brisbane teacher and mother-of-two has been fined after drink driving and failing to provide a breath sample while holidaying in Noosa.
Jasmin Stephenson, 42, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a drug on January 29, 2021, during the school holidays.
Calls were made to police regarding a disturbance at the Noosa Spit involving a woman and they found Stephenson driving her car a short time later.
Police pulled the Alexandra Hills resident over and noticed she was slurring her words.
Police detained Stephenson and she started crying before refusing to be breathalysed.
Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said while police weren’t able to provide a reading of how much alcohol was in Stephenson’s system, it needed to be regarded as a serious offence.
“The law in Queensland says that if you refuse to provide a specimen, you are automatically guilty of the high level offence,” Mr McLaughlin said.
He fined Stephenson $1000 and disqualified her from driving for 10 months for the drink driving offence which she pleaded guilty to in Noosa Magistrates Court.
A conviction was recorded.
Kaleb Lloyd
A Noosa man living at the Nomads Backpackers faced court on February 15, 2022, after causing a “substantial crash” while drunk.
Kaleb Lloyd, 30, had consumed four schooners of beer before he got behind the wheel and drove over the high alcohol limit.
Noosa Magistrates Court heard Lloyd had driven through a roundabout shortly before the crash and then lost concentration and hit a traffic light.
Parts of the light were scattered across the road and his car had “extensive damage”.
Lloyd pleaded guilty to driving over the high alcohol limit as he blew 0.151.
Lloyd was fined $1000 fine, disqualified for 12 months and had a conviction recorded.
Kia Ashleigh Bicknell
A 31-year old Nambour woman said she was driving her van to a safe spot for the night after she was intercepted driving heavily drunk in Sippy Downs.
Kia Ashleigh Bicknell was pulled over by police along Sippy Downs Drive about 10.20am on January 14 2022 where she returned a blood-alcohol content of 0.176 per cent.
Bicknell told Maroochydore Magistrates Court that she had been living out of her van and wanted to park her car someone safe for the night when she was pulled over.
She pleaded guilty to high range drink driving and was fined $900 and disqualified from driving for seven months.
A conviction was recorded.
Jayden Donald Robert Tomlinson
A Cootharaba man has pleaded guilty to high range drink driving after police saw him speeding at the Yandina Coolum Rd roundabout.
Jayden Donald Robert Tomlinson, 24, fronted Maroochydore Magistrates Court on February 14 where he pleaded guilty to drink driving.
The court heard police had seen Tomlinson’s car cross over centre white lines towards the other side of the road at 1am.
He told police he’d been texting his girlfriend while driving home after having eight beers and a can of Jim Beam.
Police allege Tomlinson was slurring his words and swaying on his feet and ordered he take a blood-alcohol test, which returned a reading of 0.175.
He was convicted and fined $900, disqualified from driving for eight months.
Jay Peter James Robertson
A Warana man who had driven one kilometre to put air in his tyres has pleaded guilty to high range drink driving.
Jay Peter James Robertson, 34, was driving on Nicklin Way on January 1 when police were called to a nearby residence after receiving concerned calls from the public.
Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard police allege officers could smell liquor on Robertson’s breath and he was “speaking in riddles”.
He told them he had driven earlier and refused to take breath analysis when asked due to a medical condition.
He later provided a blood sample, which gave a reading of 0.150.
Robertson was convicted, fined $800 and disqualified from driving for seven months.
Philipp Fabian Lantzsch
Philipp Fabian Lantzsch pleaded guilty to high range drink driving after he was busted leaving his own farewell party in Noosaville.
Police prosecutor Nick Nitschke said the 27-year-old hospitality worker had drank six tequilas the evening of January 18, 2022 before heading home along Eenie Creek Rd.
Noosa Magistrates Court heard Lantzsch returned a blood-alcohol content of 0.165 per cent.
Lantzsch pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of liquor and was disqualified for seven months and fined $850.
A conviction was recorded.
Mark Richard Molia
A Caboolture man has admitted he was drunk behind the wheel when his car crashed on the Bruce Highway in Forest Glen.
Mark Richard Molia, 35, pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on February 14 to driving under the influence of liquor after he recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.223.
The court heard police found Molia was “glassy eyed” after he his car crashed into barrier after spinning in front of another vehicle which then crashed into his vehicle on the Bruce Highway on January 27.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said it was “sheer luck” he didn’t cause a more serious accident.
Molia was convicted and disqualified from driving for 10 months.
