Soul Rebel Nixon-Harradine charged with common assault, torture and deprivation of liberty

A construction worker accused of torture, deprivation of liberty and assault has faced court as his alleged victim receives treatment in hospital.

A construction worker charged with torture, deprivation of liberty and common assault has faced a Sunshine Coast in a bid for freedom.

Construction worker, Soul Rebel Nixon-Harradine, 24, appeared on video link in the Maroochydore Magistrate Court on Monday, February 26 for his bail application.

Mr Nixon-Harradine faces 17 charges including deprivation of liberty, assault occasioning bodily harm, torture and threatening violence.

From the charges, 15 are domestic violence offences.

Mr Nixon-Harradine is yet to enter any pleas to the charges.

Police prosecutor Michael Quirk told the court there were alleged bodily harm offences committed by Mr Nixon-Harradine involving a knife and threats to kill.

“He threw shoes at (the alleged victim’s) head, dragged her by the hair, punched her in the face and multiple punches in other areas of her body, concerning bites and a very significant hand injury,” sergeant Quirk said.

Sergeant Quirk told the court police allege evidence was found at the scene.

“There is some forensic evidence as well, a clump of hair in the bedroom,” sergeant Quirk said.

Solicitor for Rod Morgan told the court the alleged victim was currently being treated for injuries at a hospital, adding the torture charge appeared to be formed based on the culmination of other charges.

“There are some questions around the duplicity of that as to whether or not that would be sufficient to make a torture charge,” Mr Morgan said.

Mr Morgan told the court a number of bail conditions could be imposed if Mr Nixon-Harradine were to be released, including an ankle monitor, however these were ultimately not accepted by Maroochydore Magistrate Chris Callaghan.

Mr Callaghan denied Mr Nixon-Harradine bail, telling the court the alleged offences were “very serious” and the prosecution’s case against him was strong.

“It is a very serious matter and it is a strong case against him, in my view. I’ve seen the statement from a witness,” Mr Callaghan said.

Mr Nixon-Harradine will appear back before the court for a committal mention on May 17, 2024.
