Shane Matthew Williams assaulted police in Hastings St, Noosa Heads

A Sunshine Coast insurance assessor was so drunk he thought a cop was a taxi driver before he kicked an officer in the chest along a popular Noosa glitter strip.

A Caloundra insurance assessor who kicked a cop in the chest and allegedly pushed a woman over in Noosa Heads was so drunk he thought a police officer was a taxi driver.

Shane Matthew Williams, 41, was placed on probation for his drunken attack on officers along the popular glitter strip of Hastings St on April 24, 2022.

Police prosecutor Amanda Brewer told Caloundra Magistrates Court on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, officers were patrolling the area about 2.30am on April 24 when they saw Williams.

The court heard the 41-year-old was being directed away from a taxi rank after he incited people to fight on the street.

A woman told police nearby that Williams had allegedly pushed her over in the nearby 7-Eleven.

He was not charged over that alleged incident.

Sergeant Brewer said officers spoke to Williams who was outside the 7-Eleven but said he had no idea what they were talking about.

Caloundra Magistrates Court heard Williams resisted police arrest after he tried to walk away.

Williams was sat down on the ground next to a police car before he kicked a cop twice in the chest.

The Caloundra man’s face was then covered with capsicum spray by police as he was handcuffed and taken to the police station.

Defence solicitor Donna Hanslow-Hastie said the insurance assessor had no recollection of the police incident after drinking with relatives at a pub.

The court heard he was so drunk he initially thought a police officer who asked his name was a taxi driver, which is why he didn’t provide it to him.

Williams pleaded guilty to assaulting and obstructing police, contravening a police requirement and failing to appear and was sentenced to six months’ probation.

Convictions were recorded.
