A Sunshine Coast man has been sentenced for the sexual assault of a ‘relative stranger’ during a house party, before launching a flurry of punches at his boss while on bail.

A Caloundra man who punched his boss while on bail for sexually assaulting a woman twice during a house party will spend at least four months behind bars.

Rhyse William Goodland, 31, pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court on August 22, 2022, to two counts of sexual assaults and one count of serious assault of a person over 60.

Crown prosecutor Rebecca Marks said Goodland had been at a Nirimba house party on April 3, 2022, when he sexually assaulted a woman who was a “relative stranger” to him.

Ms Marks said the woman had been sleeping in one of the rooms when Goodland entered the bedroom and began pacing until she woke up.

The court heard Goodland was asked to leave the room but instead he lifted the blanket off the woman and proceeded to touch her without her consent.

He then left the room but later returned to ask her to have sex with him, which she declined.

Ms Marks said the woman was standing at this point trying to get Goodland to leave the room when he hugged her and touched her again without her consent.

The woman reported the incident to police the following day and Goodland was charged a week later.

The court heard while on bail for this offence, Goodland was working in St George at a bottle shop.

Ms Marks said while he was working, his 67-year-old manager complained to Goodland that he hadn’t finished some of his required jobs for the day in time.

“The defendant turned around and punched the complainant with both fists, three of those punches connecting with the chest and face area,’ Ms Marks said.

Defence barrister Kelvin Pearson said his client had been intoxicated and had “increased his drug use” but ultimately accepted the Crown’s submission.

Mr Pearson said Goodland had since become “clean of drugs” and turned his life around.

Judge Glen Cash said he could see Goodland had done “some steps towards rehabilitation”.

Goodland was sentenced to 12 months in jail, which will be suspended for 18 months after he’s served four months in custody.
