Sunshine Coast parents are “scared and worried” for their children after a deranged email was sent to a number of state schools containing reported bomb threats.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said police responded to reports of a threatening email, which included a bomb reference, circulated to some Sunshine Coast schools on Monday.
A spokeswoman from the Department of Education confirmed there was a threatening email sent to schools.
“The Department of Education is aware a number of schools throughout the state received threats on 11 March 2024,” she said.
“The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is investigating this matter and the department will follow their advice, however at this stage QPS has advised that it appears to be a hoax.
“Police investigations into this matter are ongoing and the department is unable to give further detail at this time.”
Police attended threatened schools but were unable to locate any bombs or similar devices.
Police “quickly determined” it was a hoax, the spokesman said.
An email was sent out to thousands of SEQ parents yesterday afternoon, reportedly after 3pm, informing them of the threatening emails.
Parents who received the email have also said their children reportedly practised fire and lockdown drills at school yesterday afternoon.
“My preppy has just told me a very strange fire drill story from today that doesn’t quite add up… something about them having to lay on the mat and stay still and quiet and lock all the doors and windows too and that all grades had to do this, I think the bell might’ve been used also,” one parent said.
“I’m worried now.
“I’ll be following this up with the teachers.”
Another parent claims multiple schools across the state had lockdowns and were evacuated.
“Scary stuff I hate the unknown,” a parent said.
