Maya Mary-Anne Murray pleads guilty to evading police, drug offences

An aspiring Sunshine Coast hairdresser who became ‘entangled with some drug addict’ has racked up several charges and even sped off from police.

Australia's growing drug crisis

A would-be hairdresser who split from police has been told her involvement with the wrong crowd has led to her lapse into drugs.

Maya Mary-Anne Murray, 19, had her first run in with police detailed in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday July 8, 2022, where she faced charges for several offences.

Police prosecutor James Allen told the court the aspiring hairdresser had been pulled over about 11pm in Mooloolaba on March 28, 2022.

Mr Allen said as police exited their car and approached Ms Murray’s vehicle she sped off down the road.

The court heard police went to her home afterwards where she said someone had borrowed her car but she didn’t know their name.

Murray was given a chance to tell police who the driver actually was but she never completed a statutory declaration saying otherwise.

On April 3, 2022 police were then in Mooloolaba searching for a wanted man when they came across him outside a home Murray was staying at.

The court was told the home was searched, with 1g of marijuana, utensils and a needle found in Murray’s room.

Murray told police the items weren’t hers but wouldn’t say who they belonged to.

Mr Allen said officers came to Murray’s house once again on April 16, 2022 to arrest a wanted man.

Police searched her home after they arrived and found 1.16g of meth belonging to Murray.

Defence lawyer Ben Rynderman said Murray’s evade and drugs charges were on the lower end of offending.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist told the teenager that she was involved in drugs because she became “tangled up with some drug addict”.

Murray pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing drugs, evading police, failing to dispose of a needle, possessing utensils, and contravening a police requirement, and was fined $7250.

She was also disqualified from driving for two years, with no convictions recorded.
