An alleged cocaine trafficker faces new charges while his father and co-accused has told a court he’s “run out of money” for lawyers.
Marshall Andrew White, 21, answered to the new charges of failing to comply with a requirement to stop a private vehicle and dangerous operation of a vehicle while his father Kim Andrew White made the money admission during a brief mention in Maroochydore Magistrates Court, almost a year after the pair were arrested on serious drug dealing charges.
Police allege the father and son, both from Meridan Plains, ran a “multimillion dollar” cocaine business on the Sunshine Coast, where they used a number of individuals to sell their products while supplying others for their own uses.
They were taken into custody on May 21 last year with the son being granted bail while his father was remanded in custody despite bail applications in the Brisbane Supreme Court.
The father was most recently refused bail after alleged prison phone calls came to light where he was accused of making threats to others if granted bail and taunting police.
Mr White Jnr now faces 16 charges including four counts of possessing dangerous drugs, two of trafficking dangerous drugs and receiving or possessing property obtained from trafficking or supplying, and one count each of possessing anything used in the commission of crime and unlawful possession of weapons.
Mr White Snr faces 15 charges including four counts of possessing dangerous drugs, two of trafficking in dangerous drugs and one count each of receiving or possessing property obtained from trafficking or supplying and unlawful possession of weapons.
During their brief mention in court on Tuesday, Mr White Jnr appeared in court on bail while his father appeared by video from jail, telling Magistrate Chris Callaghan he had no lawyer but had applied for Legal Aid.
“I was funding it myself, but I ran out of money so I’m trying for Legal Aid,” Mr White Snr told the court.
Legal Aid solicitor Rachel Holland, who appeared for Mr White Jnr, said the 48-year-old father’s application had not been granted as yet.
Ms Holland explained she was only recently granted aid to represent the 21-year-old and received the brief of evidence from his previous lawyers on May 2.
She said she was waiting for her staff to collate the brief which was currently eight volumes in length.
The lawyer also said she needed to take her client through what she had and hoped to commit the charges to the higher court sooner rather than later.
The 21-year-old was placed on a new bail undertaking after being given a notice to appear by police for the additional two driving charges.
Court documents state Mr White Jnr allegedly operated a vehicle dangerously at Creekside Blvd at Currimundi on April 22 last year.
Police further allege in court documents on the same date and place the 21-year-old failed to comply with a requirement by a police officer to stop the vehicle for a prescribed purpose.
He was charged with these offences on April 21 this year by the Caloundra Criminal Investigation Branch.
Magistrate Chris Callaghan adjourned both of the cases to June 30.
No pleas have been entered.
