Security cameras have captured the moment police foiled a break-in at a popular Sunshine Coast sailing club – the second time the venue has been targeted by thieves in a month.

Maroochy Sailing Club commodore Tim Edwards said it was “very disappointing” to learn of the second break-in attempt overnight on Tuesday.

Police have charged a 22-year-old Maroochydore man following the incident at Chambers Island.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said police would allege about 1am on May 23, the 22-year-old, along with another person, broke into the club on Bradman Ave and stole electrical equipment.

“Attending police located the 22-year-old a short distance away and he was later charged with enter premises with intent to commit indictable offence, possession of a knife in a public place and three counts of possess dangerous drug,” he said.

The man was due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday, May 23.

“Investigations are ongoing to locate the second person and investigators encourage anyone with information to contact police,” the spokesman said.

Mr Edwards said this was the second incident in about a month.

An electric outboard motor, lithium batteries and a charging system worth about $10,000 was stolen during the prior break-in.

“It’s an expensive option, we’re trying to go carbon neutral for one of our boats so we invested in a system for one of our boats,” Mr Edwards said.

He said the electric equipment and batteries had been bought from club funds as an old engine needed replacing.

The commodore said since the break-in a month ago, the club had installed security cameras, which shared video with some club members’ phones.

Mr Edwards said during the latest break-in, one of his club members John Ladewig was the “hero of the day” after he got up during the night and happened to glance at his phone, saw the alleged break-in taking place and alerted police.

The CCTV footage shows the moment police make their presence known.

The commodore said the club was shut for the winter break.
