Man flown to Brisbane hospital after fall through Ocean St roof

A young man is fighting for life after he fell through a roof at Maroochydore’s party precinct as detectives piece together the moments before the incident.

Detectives are combing the scene as a man fights for life after he fell through a skylight in Maroochydore’s party precinct overnight.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said officers were investigating a 20-year-old man’s fall through a roof skylight on Ocean St.

The man fell through a skylight and a void in the first storey of the Centrepoint Arcade and landed on the ground floor, a fall of about 10m.

The arcade is on Ocean St, next to a travel agency and nightclub on one side and another bar and restaurant on the other side.

Paramedics were called to the incident about 10.50pm.

They rushed him in a critical condition, with a serious head injury, to the Sunshine Coast Airport where he was flown by rescue helicopter to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Detectives were at the scene on Friday, February 17, investigating what led up to the incident.

They were talking to business owners in the centre.

Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Constable James Brown said there were no suspicious circumstances.

“We’re looking at the circumstances of how he’s ended up on the roof,” he said.

Duporth Book Exchange worker Grant Howard said his father, who owns the bookstore, was one of the first at the arcade this morning.

“There was just broken glass and blood … Dad cleaned it up this morning when he arrived,” he said.

The book seller said in the four years the store had been at the centre, there had been no incidents like this one.

Other store owners the Sunshine Coast Daily spoke to were not aware of the incident that had taken place overnight.

Whittles Body Corporate Management Services branch manager Noel Gray-Browne said the building was registered in 1977, but declined to comment further on the matter.
