A man charged with three counts of murder following a horror crash on the Bruce Hwy south of Gympie is under prison guard at a Sunshine Coast hospital.
Rafferty Raymond Rolfe, 25, of Yandina, was charged with three counts of murder earlier this week following the crash on the Bruce Hwy at Federal on Friday, July 21.
Imbil woman Jessica Townley, Yandina woman Gypsy Satterley and Hay Point man Terry Bishop all died in the crash.
The Isuzu MU-X allegedly stolen by Mr Rolfe was alleged to have rammed a Nissan Navara, which had Mr Rolfe’s girlfriend Ms Satterley and 65-year-old Mr Bishop inside.
As a result, police allege the Navara crashed into a third car driven by Ms Townley.
Mr Rolfe, the sole survivor of the crash, was taken under police guard to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman confirmed that as of the afternoon of July 27 Mr Rolfe remained in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield said Mr Rolfe was now under guard by corrective services.
Until yesterday, police had been guarding the man at the hospital.
“He’s waiting for a bed in a secure wing at the PA (Princess Alexandra Hospital),” Sergeant Mansfield said.
The detective said there was no timeline for a transfer.
