A Maroochydore man who is banned from the Sunshine Plaza allegedly attacked police and tried to flee on foot after his sticky fingers were caught stealing.

Joshua Benjamin Thompson pushed for bail freedom in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday July 8, 2022 after he allegedly tried to escape custody.

Court documents say Thompson had been located in Maroochydore on July 7, 2022 by police as he was the main suspect for several alleged stealing matters.

It’s alleged by police Thompson had stolen items from Tommy Hilfiger and Myer on May 18, June 29 and June 30, 2022 all while being banned from the Sunshine Plaza.

Police allege in court documents Thompson fled on foot and tried to flee custody on July 7, 2022, at one point shoving an officer in the chest during his daring escape.

During his bail application duty lawyer Matt Cooper conceded his alleged stealing offences were “unsophisticated” and said Thompson would be contesting the assault police charge.

Mr Cooper said Thompson, who was banned from the Sunshine Plaza, would spend too much time in custody if he wasn’t granted bail.

Police prosecutor James Allen said Thompson had been on bail for other alleged stealing offences and was on parole.

“Bail’s refused Mr Thompson,” Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said.

Thompson’s matter was adjourned to July 18, 2022 on three charges of stealing, three of trespassing, assaulting and obstructing police.
