A former Bundaberg man has been hauled back into custody on remand after police allegedly located a handgun at his home only weeks after he was released on parole.
The court heard James Denning had only been released on from jail for a matter of weeks when police allege he tried to steal a trolley of goods in Maroochydore, leading officers to his home.
Police prosecutor Mel Pyke said when authorities went to his home to execute a search warrant, it will be alleged a handgun and ammunition were uncovered.
He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, authority required to possess explosives and stealing.
No pleas have been entered.
The Maroochydore man faced court on Monday where he applied for his release through duty lawyer Michael Robinson.
Sergeant Pyke said the 27-year-old should not be granted bail due to his “shocking” criminal history and the fact he was on parole for serious offending.
Mr Robinson conceded Denning had only been out of jail for a few weeks and was living with his dad in Maroochydore.
The Legal Aid solicitor said Denning was looking after his sick father as his carer.
He told the court Denning allegedly declared the weapon to police at the time of his arrest, which went towards his co-operation with authorities.
Mr Robinson believed the 27-year-old could abide by strict bail conditions, however magistrate Raelene Ellis was not swayed.
She said the Maroochydore man had spent substantial periods of time in jail, mostly for robberies and believed he was a risk of committing more crimes.
Denning had his bail refused. He will return to court on August 20.
