A Sunshine Coast police officer didn’t let a little saltwater stop him as he chased a man into the sea at a popular beach.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police were called to an area near Coolum Beach’s main beach, on David Low Way, after 5pm on Thursday, January 11 following reports a man was smashing bottles on a footpath.

The area was teeming with beachgoers and holiday-makers near the Coolum Surf Club and the popular children’s playground at Tickle Park.

A spectacular arrest ensued as the police officer confronted the man in the sea and took him down at the waterline.

A police vehicle followed the officer onto the beach.

The 27-year-old Wurtulla man was charged with public nuisance, obstruct police and possessing drugs.

The man was given police bail and he is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on February 5.
