Police have found a young Sunshine Coast man with meth, a folding knife, and money after he was captured on CCTV partaking in a deal near a Maroochydore arcade during trading hours, a court has heard.

Dominic Joseph Stewart, 19, was fined $400 fine in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on May 6 for one count of possessing dangerous drugs, one count of possessing a knife in public, and one count of obstructing police.

The court heard a witness told police patrol officers near Sunshine Plaza about a “deal” which took place near Timezone involving Stewart and a group of people about 1.40pm on April 12, 2022.

Officers reviewed footage which showed Stewart along with several other participants at the arcade before they approached the 19-year-old who was wanted for another matter and conducted checks.

As Stewart was being taken to Maroochydore police station, he tried to flee before officers caught up with him shortly after.

Police searched the 19-year-old’s bag and uncovered 1.98g of methamphetamine inside a clip seal bag, a folding knife, and money.

Stewart declined to be interviewed by officers and claimed the drugs did not belong to him.

Police prosecutor James Allen told the court Stewart was on a good behaviour bond and has tried to improve his behaviour but may have problems with drugs.

Prosecutor Allen asked for the 19-year-old to be fined and placed on probation.

Defence lawyer Chris Lumme said Stewart attended school until Year 12 and experienced difficulties with work because he lost his licence.

Mr Lumme asked for no convictions to be recorded for Stewart’s offences.

Magistrate Rod Madsen said his ruling would be based on deterrence weighed against Stewart’s age.

“Clearly you’ve been using drugs for a while because look at your traffic history. There’s multiple drug driving offences. You’re still very young,” Magistrate Madsen said.

“This is problematic offending. It might seem minor but if you persistently do the same thing eventually someone will get hurt.”

Stewart pleaded guilty to the offences. No convictions were recorded.
